Dynamic model of the short-term variability of microphytobenthic biomass on temperate intertidal mudflats ArchiMer
Guarini, Jean-marc; Blanchard, Gf; Gros, Philippe; Gouleau, Dominique; Bacher, Cedric.
In the present paper, we list and document the relevant behavioral and physiological processes controlling primary productivity of epipelic microalgae on intertidal mudflats in order to develop a simplified model. We first propose, in an attempt to characterize the 'photosynthetically active biomass' of the epipelic community, a new approach to describe the photic environment at the sediment surface, by substituting a discrete a-layer model in place of continuous vertical light distribution. This concept thus allows us to build a functional representation of the distribution of the photosynthetically active biomass in the sediment and, by then integrating the light and temperature forcing of the latter biomass, to predict the dynamics of the whole epipelic...

Dynamics of spatial patterns of microphytobenthic biomass: inferences from a geostatistical analyisis of two comprenhensive surveys in Marennes-Oléron Bay (France) ArchiMer
Guarini, Jean-marc; Blanchard, Gerard; Bacher, Cedric; Gros, Philippe; Riera, Pascal; Richard, Pierre; Gouleau, Dominique; Galois, Robert; Prou, Jean; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
Microphytobenthos plays an important role as primary producer in shallow embayments subject to a tidal regime. The present paper aims to characterize the spatial patterns of sedimentary chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass in 2 seasons in the wide intertidal mudflats of the Marennes-Oleron Bay (France); furthermore, it provides estimates of total microphytobenthic biomass. Accordingly, a systematic sampling scheme was performed in June 1995 and in January 1996. On average, biomass was higher in June (ca 120 mg chl a m-2) than in January (ca 85 mg chl a m-2). Moreover, the geostatistical analysis revealed that spatial similarities were propagated over larger distances in June (6 km) than in January (2.2 km). In order to account for this result , we suggest that...

Inhibition of microphytobenthic photosynthesis by the herbicides atrazine and diuron ArchiMer
Legrand, Helene; Herlory, Olivier; Guarini, Jean-marc; Blanchard, Gerard; Richard, Pierre.
Atrazine and diuron are two herbicides present in sediments of the intertidal mudflats in the Pertuis Charentais (Atlantic coast, France). They may negatively affect photosynthesis processes in microphytobenthos, the most productive primary producer in these environments. The impact of these herbicides on benthic diatoms was investigated using PAM fluorimetry on natural microalgal communities, once extracted from sediment, by following the variations of the effective quantum yield of PSII (Phi(PSII)) during exposure to atrazine and diuron concentrations in a range 0.1 mu g L-1 (.) 10 mg L-1. No significant effect was noticed for 0.1 mu g L-1 concentrations, but progressive reduction in photosynthetic efficiency, always occurring within 15 min, was...

Inter-annual fluctuations of zooplankton communities in the Bay of Villefranche-sur-mer from 1995 to 2005 (Northern Ligurian Sea, France) ArchiMer
Vandromme, Pierre; Stemmann, L.; Berline, Leo; Gasparini, S.; Mousseau, Laure; Prejger, F.; Passafiume, O.; Guarini, Jean-marc; Gorsky, G..
An integrated analysis of the pelagic ecosystems of the Ligurian Sea is performed combining time series (1995–2005) of several zooplankton groups (one group for copepods smaller than 0.724 mm3 and nine groups for individuals larger than 0.724 mm3, i.e. large copepods, decapod larvæ, other crustaceans, chaetognaths, appendicularians, pteropods, thaliaceans, gelatinous predators and other zooplankton), chlorophyll-a, nutrients, salinity, temperature, density, and local weather at Point B coastal station (Northern Ligurian Sea). From 1995 to 2000 winters were wet and mild resulting in lower winter sea surface density. These years showed lower than average nutrients and zooplankton concentrations while chlorophyll-a biomass was high. After 2000, winters were...

Microstructure of microphytobenthic biofilm and its spatio-temporal dynamics in an intertidal mudflat (Aiguillon Bay, France) ArchiMer
Herlory, Olivier; Guarini, Jean-marc; Richard, Pierre; Blanchard, Gerard.
The spatio-temporal dynamics of the microphytobenthic biofilm was analysed at microscale over a complete day-time emersion period in an intertidal mudflat. The structures of the biofilm were monitored by analysing the variability of the epipelic diatom cover in the horizontal dimension and the kinetics of biomass dispersion in the vertical dimension. Colonisation of the sediment surface by diatoms was rapid (within 15 min); 75% of the biomass contained in the top 1 mm was concentrated in the upper 200 mum, but the cover never reached 100%. This biomass had a higher chlorophyll a/pheopigment ratio than deeper in the sediment, suggesting a better physiological state and a higher photosynthetic potential. The dynamics of the biomass in the upper 200 mum...

Modélisation de la dynamique du microphytobenthos des vasières intertidales du bassin de Marennes-Oléron. Effets des synchroniseurs physiques sur la régulation de la production ArchiMer
Guarini, Jean-marc.
The study aimed at quantifying the spatio-temporal evolution of microphytobenthic biomass in intertidal mudflats of Marennes-Oléron Bay. To reach this goal, a dynamic model has been proposed, including processes of primary production, active migration of epipelic diatoms and biomass lasses due to mortalities on one hand and resuspension in the water column during submersion on the other hand. The spatialisation is given by a hydrodynamic madel which calculates the water height everywhere. The photic environment of microphytobenthos is described in a discrete way, by means of two layers: the biofilm of epipelic algae « S »on the top of the sediment and the fust centimeter of the mud « F ». The endogenous vertical migration rhythm of epipelic algae controls...

Modelling the mud surface temperature on intertidal flats to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of the benthic microalgal photosynthetic capacity ArchiMer
Guarini, Jean-marc; Blanchard, Gerard F.; Gros, Philippe; Harrison, S.j..
The mud surface temperature (MST) of an intertidal mudflat in Marennes-Oléron Bay (France) and the biomass-specific photosynthetic capacity (PBmax) of benthic microalgae were modelled to investigate their spatio-temporal dynamics. Simulations were performed over 2 different periods during and after the microphytobenthos spring bloom (April and June, respectively) and under 2 different tidal conditions (spring and neap tides). The deterministic MST model is based on thermodynamic processes. Comparison at different periods between measured data series and simulations clearly establishes the reliability of the model, thus allowing extrapolations over time and space. The spatio-temporal dynamics of MST is primarily controlled by the immersion-emersion...

Quantifying the short-term temperature effect on light-saturated photosynthesis of intertidal microphytobenthos ArchiMer
Blanchard, Gerard F.; Guarini, Jean-marc; Richard, Pierre; Gros, Philippe; Mornet, Francoise.
A mathematical expression is proposed to describe the relationship between the photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) of natural assemblages of motile benthic diatoms and temperature. Experiments were performed in 2 different seasons to document the response of Pmax to a rapid increase in temperature (3*C h-1). In both cases, there was a progressive increase in Pmax up to an optimum temperature (Topt), beyond which Pmax declined rapidly. Topt did not change from September to December 1995, but the maximum photosynthetic capacity (PMAX, i.e. Pmax at Topt) was twice as high in September as in December.

Shell of the Great Scallop Pecten maximus as a high-frequency archive of paleoenvironmental changes - art. no. Q08001 ArchiMer
Chauvaud, Laurent; Lorrain, Anne; Dunbar, Robert; Paulet, Yves; Thouzeau, Gérard; Jean, Frédéric; Guarini, Jean-marc; Mucciarone, David.
We investigate the environmental and biological controls on oxygen isotope ratios in the shells of modern Pecten maximus bivalves collected alive in the Bay of Brest (France). Seasonal delta(18)O profiles, obtained by drilling the daily calcite ridges deposited at the surface of the left valve, were compared with in situ measurements of temperature and salinity. We show that P. maximus delta(18)O values accurately track seasonal variations in bottom water temperature. Shell growth rate has no significant effect on shell delta(18)O values. Our study demonstrates that daily variations in water temperature can be reconstructed within about 0.5 degrees C. Temperatures estimated with the paleotemperature equation established in this study were compared with...

Sound characterization of the European lobster Homarus gammarus in tanks ArchiMer
Jezequel, Youenn; Bonnel, Julien; Coston-guarini, Jennifer; Guarini, Jean-marc; Chauvaud, Laurent.
Experiments in marine behavioural ecology rely heavily on observations made in tanks. However, when studying acoustic behaviours of marine animals in confined volumes, the effects of reverberation must be characterized, something that has been overlooked in parts of the marine ecology literature. In this study, we characterized reverberation in tanks using an artificial sound source and examined the implications for bioacoustic studies using sounds emitted by the European lobster Homarus gammarus during feeding and in response to stress. Broadband and transient sounds commonly produced by crustaceans were severely impacted by reverberation such that their spectral characteristics and pulse width durations could not be assessed. In contrast, low-frequency...

Spatio-temporal differentiation in the population structure of Hydrobia ulvae on an intertidal mudflat (Marennes-Oleron Bay, France) ArchiMer
Haubois, Anne-gaelle; Guarini, Jean-marc; Richard, Pierre; Blanchard, Gerard; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
Spatio-temporal changes in density, breeding cycle, growth and population structure of Hydrobia ulvae (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia) were studied by monthly sampling of a wide bare mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay. Four stations, located along a cross-shore transect and characterized by different geomorphological structures, were investigated from March 2000 to February 2001. Hydrobia ulvae was mainly distributed in the upper half part of the mudflat and no individuals were found in the lower part. The breeding cycle extended from March to December and showed two annual peaks, in spring and in autumn. Three cohorts were recruited during the year and showed high growth rates during summer; the parameters of the von Bertalanffy model describing the growth curves...

Spatio-temporal structure of the epipelic diatom assemblage from an intertidal mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay, France ArchiMer
Haubois, Anne-gaelle; Sylvestre, F; Guarini, Jean-marc; Richard, Pierre; Blanchard, G.
Spatio-temporal changes in taxonomic composition and structure of an epipelic diatom assemblage from an intertidal mudflat on the French Atlantic coast was studied over an annual cycle along a cross-shore transect. The assemblage structure was described by estimating both relative abundance and contribution to biovolume of each species. Results showed that the assemblage was numerically dominated by small-sized species (mean relative abundance of 91%). Large species, however, significantly contributed to the total biovolume (mean contribution to biovolume of 49%). A factorial correspondence analysis indicated that the epipelic assemblage was relatively homogeneous along the cross-shore transect but emphasized the seasonal succession of diatom species. In...

System-Based Assessments—Improving the Confidence in the EIA Process ArchiMer
Wilson, Jeff; Hinz, Shawn; Coston-guarini, Jennifer; Maze, Camille; Guarini, Jean-marc; Chauvaud, Laurent.
his viewpoint article examines Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) practices in developed and transitioning nations, identifies weaknesses, and proposes a new quantitative approach. The literature indicates that there exists little to no standardization in EIA practice, transitioning nations rely on weak scientific impact analyses, and the establishment of baseline conditions is generally missing. The more fundamental issue is that the “receptor”-based approach leads to a qualitative and subjective EIA, as it does not adequately integrate the full measure of the complexity of ecosystems, ongoing project risks, and cumulative impacts. We propose the application of a new framework that aims to ensure full life cycle assessment of impacts applicable to any...
